Art Deco Celebrates the Radio: Jan 14-16 2022 in Miami Beach, Florida
Festival Hours: Friday Noon – 10pm ; Saturday 10am – 10pm ; Sunday 10am – 8pm
Art Deco Weekend is a free community cultural festival celebrating Miami’s architecture, history, arts, and culture. Organized by the Miami Design Preservation League (MDPL), the festival will celebrate its 45th year in 2022 with the theme: Art Deco Celebrates the Radio. This year, the event returns in-person to Lummus Park between 5th and 15th streets along Ocean Drive.
MDPL started Art Deco Weekend in 1977 to bring attention to the beautiful Art Deco architecture along Ocean Drive and throughout Miami Beach. This signature event is MDPL’s largest educational outreach program of the year and a major part of the organization’s initiative to preserve, protect, and promote historic preservation in the Art Deco District and greater Miami.
Highlights for the lecture series include Peter Sheridan’s on-demand virtual talk on Deco Radio: The Most Beautiful Radios Ever Made, Danielle Shapiro’s talk on John Vassos at the Wolfsonian-FIU, and A. Brad Schwartz virtual talk on Broadcast Hysteria: Orson Welles’s War of the Worlds and the Art of Fake News.
Over 150,000 locals and tourists enjoy a variety of free events and activities including the artisan and antiques marketplace, guided architectural tours, classic car show, lectures, films, sketch walks, kids club, dog walk, and a variety of entertaining musical events by local and national performers. All with the mission to educate the public about the Art Deco Historic District, the history and culture of Miami Beach and historic preservation.
